VSH (Cordovan) Italian Queen Breeder
Notice: Due to the severe drought conditions in Texas last year we made the decision to not get our State Inspection and Queen Tags for the 2012 Beekeeping Season. This decision was made to allow our colonies to recuperate and build back up to produce the highest quality Queens possible.

Dishonesty In The Beekeeping Industry
As Beekeeping popularity has become greater and greater dishonesty and greed has also become more of a problem. While the majority of Beekeepers are hard working, honest and good hearted people there are unfortunately a few bad apples. Please be aware the information found on this page is the view of it's author and in most cases no laws are being broken. > Dishonesty in Beekeeping Industry <
1st 2011 Texas Mesquite Bloom (April 24, 2011) FYI- Pure Mesquite Honey: Ask anyone from Texas what their favorite Honey is and most likely they will tell you South Texas Mesquite Honey. Every year we have customers request Pure Mesquite Honey and we have to tell them that our Honey due to where our Hives are located cannot be classified as "Pure Mesquite Honey". The very next thing they ask is why is your Honey not "Pure Mesquite" while other Beekeepers in the same area are selling their Honey as "Pure Mesquite" ? Our answer is simple. In order for Honey to be considered to be Pure or from just one nectar source the Bees would have to only collect nectar from the Mesquite tree. The fact is when most mesquite trees are blooming so are Texas Wild Flowers and many other Trees and Flowers as well as other Nectar Sources. In order for Honey to be "Pure Mesquite" or even considered "Pure Mesquite" the Mesquite Tree would have to be the only Tree or Nectar source in bloom. Over the years we have seen Mesquite in full bloom without a single Honey Bee on them as bees will seek out whatever source is more appealing to them. In the end the only way to truly know what source a Honey is from is to send a sample to a lab and have the pollen within the honey tested. Our Honey will always be sold as a Variety Honey due to the large number of nectar producing sources in bloom at the same time.
Rare 2011 2nd Mesquite Bloom (May 23, 2011) -South Central Texas is currently under a "Dangerous Drought Condition"- We have not had any measurable rain in over 8 months. The picture above was taken on May 23, 2011 in the same Out Yard as the picture on top. The picture above shows a Mesquite Bloom along with Mesquite Bean Pods on the same tree in the background. The mesquite Bean Pods are produced as a result of Pollination by Honey Bees or other Pollinators. It is extremely rare to see the Mesquite Bean Pods as well as Mesquite Blooms together at the same time. The blooms appeared after a very light rain event which may have triggered the rare second bloom. We could not even find one bloom that had a Honeybee working it. - We do not sell package Honey Bees or Nucleus Colonies -

"Pollen Patties" Bee Nutrition 11/6/2010
Now more than ever Bee Nutrition is extremely important for a healthy colony. Due to an ever growing number of diseases and pest that effect Honey Bees as well poorer foraging, Pollen Patties are becoming more and more popular with Beekeepers. Pollen Patties can be fed anytime especially during times of dearth, over winter and most important of all coming out winter into spring before the main flow to aid in increasing colony numbers. Plastic Foundation V Wax Foundation
- The Great Debate! - Side 1 Side 2 Plastic Frame above shown after 3 plus months in a hive. Get a group of Bee Keepers together and bring up the subject of Plastic Foundation verses Wax Sheet Foundation and you'll most likely get a heated debate. To most Beekeepers that have been involved in Beekeeping for any length of time the only thing plastic foundation is good for is to line the bottom of a trash can and to some they'll tell you plastic just aint right........... Honey Bee Management in Drought Conditions
As many Texas Beekeepers are now finding themselves in one of the worst ever in recorded history droughts, many are wondering if their colonies will survive. Many Beekeepers are finding they are having to feed and will be doing so up to and through the up coming winter. Brood nest are extremely small for this time of year as many Queens are shutting down to a lack of pollen and nectar flow. For more Please click here> Drought and Honey Bees |
